by Cameron McPherson, Side by Side Board Member & Former Youth

I came out more than 17 years ago at the age of 14. I was lucky to have extremely supportive family and friends. At Side by Side (then, ROSMY) I laughed, learned leadership skills, and formed lifelong friendships. I also found out that my “comfortable” coming out wasn’t always the norm.

Friends talked about rough family situations and bullying at school. I was grateful – and still am – that Side by Side provides a safe space and lifeline for LGBTQ+ youth in Central Virginia.

The times and technologies have changed, but the needs of LGBTQ+ youth remain as homophobia and discrimination persists in our schools and communities. In a survey of Side by Side youth, 95 percent said they “feel like they matter” after attending programs. I want them to KNOW they matter.

All youth deserve a safe and supportive place where they can be themselves – and we need to show them we’re on their side. That’s why I’m supporting Side by Side this #GivingTuesday.
