LGBTQ+ youth are 120 percent more likely than their straight peers to experience homelessness. Side by Side partnered with Advocates for Richmond Youth to become more informed about youth homelessness across Central Virginia. With the information we learned, Side by Side has decided to create a Host Home program specific for LGBTQ+ youth.
The LGBTQ+ Youth Housing Collaborative was formed with Side by Side, the Virginia Anti-Violence Project, and the Nationz Foundation to help LGBTQ+ youth find stable, safe, affirming, and permanent housing. Within the collaborative, Side by Side connects homeless youth with trained and vetted volunteers who are interested in opening their homes for emergency or long term hosting.

In December 2018, we hired a Youth Resource Advocate to provide clinical case management to Side by Side youth.
This may look like
Goal setting and management
Referrals for additional affirming services
Care coordination for youth with complex needs
Trauma informed support during times of crisis.

Side by Side hosts a resource closet in order to provide more holistic support to our youth. Included in our resource closet are toiletries, clothes of various sizes, bags, gender affirming materials (ex: binders, breast forms, etc.), and shoes.
All youth (ages 11-25) who come to Side by Side are welcome to take anything they need from the resource closet. Youth are not asked to demonstrate need. Resource closet is located on the second floor of the building. If you have not attended Side by Side programming in the past, reach out to CasSandra Calin, or see available staff on site to access the resource closet.
