Virginia Commonwealth University, Chevelle Moss-Savage and Church of the Holy Comforter to be honored at May 6 event for work to support LGBTQ+ youth in Central Virginia

Richmond, Va. (Feb. 28, 2017) – Side by Side (formerly ROSMY) is pleased to announce the honorees of its 2017 Catalyst Awards. Recipients will be recognized for their work in the community to support LGBTQ+ youth at the organization’s Springtime: Celebrate Side by Side fundraiser on Saturday May 6 from 7-11 p.m. at the Tuckahoe Woman’s Club.

Side by Side’s 2017 Catalyst recipients include:

  •  Virginia Commonwealth University: As one the country’s most diverse institutions, VCU works to promote awareness and inclusivity for LGBTQ+ students, faculty and staff through a variety of programs and initiatives. Its Lavender Housing provides a place for LGBTQ+ first year students to live and learn with their peers, while the Lavender Empowerment Summit offers learning and community building opportunities for LGBTQ+ students.
  • Chevelle Moss-Savage: Moss-Savage presents at several national conferences about health care issues specific to LGBTQ+ students of color at historically black colleges and universities. Additionally, she spearheaded several programs at Virginia State University including organizing a LGTBQ+ graduation ceremony and changing gendered dress code requirements. VSU became the first HBCU within Virginia to implement gender inclusive bathrooms throughout campus through Moss-Savage’s leadership.
  • Church of the Holy Comforter: An open and affirming congregation, Holy Comforter has provided support to Richmond’s LGBTQ+ community for decades. The Episcopalian church near Willow Lawn provides advocacy and direct ministry to youth.

“Side by Side works every day to ensure LGBTQ+ youth across Virginia live in a safe, inclusive, and affirming environment,” said Side by Side’s executive director Ted Lewis. “We can’t do this work alone, and we’re especially grateful for this year’s Catalyst recipients for their commitment to creating supportive and diverse communities.”

Springtime: Celebrate Side by Side is presented by Altria. Other generous sponsors include Capital One, Lewis Insurance Associates, Weinstein Properties, Dominion, PadillaCRT, Wayne Gauthier at Joyner Fine Properties and McKay Wealth Management.
