Who is Patty?

Patty is a Richmond area native, with ties to the community.  A three time graduate of Longwood, she attended the school first earning a degree in …. English???  but returned to complete Master’s Degrees in both Counseling and Special Education.  Patty is a huge fan of animals, and is always willing to tell you stories about her dog.  She also enjoys kayaking, reading, and hiking.  But one of her favorite things to do is artsy stuff— painting, drawing, and building.

Patty’s Experience

Patty always knew she wanted to work with people, and began her journey as an English and Special Education teacher.  After returning to school and completing residency, she is a Licensed Professional Counselor, who has been in the mental health field for over 20 years, working with children, adolescents, young adults, and families.  She’s also a Registered Play Therapist and a Certified EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapist who practices trauma informed care.

Role at Side by Side

Patty sees her role at Side by Side as fundamentally about facilitating a safe space for emotional growth and exploration.  At its core, this counseling relationship is a process grounded in trust, empathy, and respect, where individuals are given the space to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences without fear of judgment or harm. In this safe space, healing, change, and self-discovery become possible.  Patty endeavors to support the Side by Side population by encouraging self-awareness, fostering resilience, and empowering young people to connect with their inner strengths.
