2022 Side by Side Scholarship Recipients Announced!

We are so happy to announce all of our recipients for this year’s scholarships. We thank all of the applicants as well as all of our amazing scholarship funders and honorees. Thank you for supporting LGBTQ+ youth in our community and investing in their success!

Foster Mardigian (he/they)

Prime Timers Central Virginia Woody Baldwin Scholarship Recipient

Foster Mardigian is an incoming freshman at the University of Pittsburgh who has contributed to Side by Side groups and Richmond LGBTQ+ initiatives since 2017. He supports local youth through his work as a camp counselor and with the Henrico County Equity Ambassadors and Ethnic Studies programs.

Carol Storey Memorial Scholarship Recipient

"I’ve come so far from when I first started high school. I’ve changed a lot, and thankfully for the better. I know I’ve got my future ahead of me, and I’m thankful for Side by Side’s help in this endeavor. If anyone is reading this: you’re gonna be alright. You can do this!"

Hannah Berg (she/they)

Michael B. Huntley and Beth Panilaitis Scholarship Recipient

"I am a graduate at Atlee High School and will be attending VCU Arts in the fall to major in film and photography.

I am a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and an avid participant in the Richmond queer community.

I was the president of Atlee’s GSA club, and I also attended the Atlee walkout in March. I was actively involved with ITS and theater."

Ali Moros Taylor (they/them)

Gavin Grimm Award Recipient

Ali is a 21 year old nonbinary person of color, who came out at 14. Through Side by Side Ali started their advocacy work, speaking to dozens of people each year about the intricacies of their identities, including members of Congress. They were also in Side by Side’s leadership group, helping create 3 proms — cultivating space for queer joy. Ali plans to attend the College of Wooster for their first year this fall, where they will continue bringing their intersectional perspective to their new community.
